At Hemingford Grey Primary School, we believe children learn best when they are actively engaged, curious, and able to explore their learning independently. One of the ways we support this is through continuous provision from Year 1 to Year 4.
Continuous provision refers to the carefully chosen, high-quality resources and learning opportunities that are permanently available for children to access throughout the day. These resources are thoughtfully organised in different areas of learning and are always available for children to explore independently.
Rather than simply being a collection of activities, continuous provision is designed to encourage children to practise, apply and deepen the skills they are learning across the curriculum. Through hands-on experiences, children develop their confidence, independence, creativity, communication skills and problem-solving abilities. Our environments grow as the children develop and flourish. Continuous provision classrooms can create a safe, more comfortable environment which positively impacts physical, cognitive, emotional and well being.
Children learn through purposeful play, investigation and exploration. By choosing resources, following their interests and engaging with meaningful activities, they develop a deeper understanding of concepts and make valuable connections in their learning.
Play is not separate from learning. It is one of the most powerful ways young children develop knowledge, skills and understanding across all areas of the curriculum.
Adults play a vital role in successful continuous provision. Teachers and support staff carefully observe children, interact with them, ask thoughtful questions and extend their learning through discussion and challenge. By responding to individual interests and needs, adults help children to think more deeply, develop new skills and make further progress.
Continuous provision is not an additional activity or an extra part of the day. It is an integral part of the curriculum itself. The environment, resources and adult interactions are all carefully planned to support the learning outcomes we want children to achieve.
Through continuous provision, children have opportunities to revisit and consolidate learning, develop independence, and become enthusiastic, confident learners who are motivated to explore the world around them.
